Stop the video surveillance of public places

On 10th April 2006, the start of the Leipzig pilot project of video surveillance of public streets and places will see its 10th anniversary. Leipzig is considered Germany’s model and pioneer city for permanent video surveillance of public spaces. There are currently four different locations, where the police not only observe but also record what is happening. The model of Leipzig has been adopted by at least 27 German cities using a total of 100 cameras. Security hysteria, image politics, populism, a yearning for social order, and governmental fantasies of omnipotence have promoted this expansion of police power. The use of surveillance cameras is part of an intervention concept by the police, the public affairs office and the federal police, aiming at driving out unpopular social groups of the town centre. In the general discourse on security, which is increasingly approving of repression and displacement, security is seen as a location factor. Local politicians, retailers and security authorities intend to drive out everything and everybody scaring off potential investors and tourists. A new apartheid is developing in Leipzig and in other cities, targeting homeless people, drug users, young people and migrants. Poverty must not be seen any longer.
However, in the end, all of us will be under constant suspicion. For those who fit the model of white middle-class consumers, this “merely” means surveillance. Those who, with or without intention, do not correspond will potentially face displacement and punishment.

We demand the right to our city for all!

We demand social solutions instead of the expansion of surveillance!

We demand a right for divergent models of life!

We demand: Stop police video surveillance in public places!
